Massage helps after a miscarriage or termination
A miscarriage or termination can be a difficult experiences to navigate. Often people feel alone, have conflicted feelings, and don’t know ho to ask for nurturing support. This can especially be true for first trimester pregnancy losses - however they come about.
Many people benefit from receiving massage after a miscarriage or termination. However, it’s important that the approach is gentle and compassionate, taking into account varying emotional and physical aspects of recovery. I tailor each session to meet a person on their unique journey and listen to what they want and need at the time - considering both physical and emotional needs
Physical benefits: Mindful massage can help with the physical effects of pregnancy loss, such as muscle tension, stress, or discomfort. A miscarriage or termination can be physically taxing, and gentle massage can help alleviate pain, improve circulation, and promote relaxation in the body. It can also address any lingering effects from medical procedures, such as discomfort from cramping or the body’s healing process. Muscles receive oxygen and blood to restore the tissues and help recovery. Massage can also increase the flow of lymph, which improves the health of the immune system. In addition, massage reduces unwanted fatigue and symptoms related to depression and anxiety.
Emotional support: Emotionally, lots of things can come up. Healing requires time but it also requires space for processing. Massage provides a nurturing and safe space for people to connect in with their bodies, release tension, and promote relaxation. The calming touch of a skilled and trained practitioner can help reduce stress and anxiety, which are common after loss - whether it is planned, prepared for, or not. It can also offer emotional relief, allowing space for grief without words. I place emphasis on a heart-centered approach - I offer unconditional compassion and we see what you can give yourself here too (self compassion is highly underrated but wildly powerful).
Important considerations: It’s important for anyone receiving massage after a miscarriage or termination to be able to communicate their needs and emotional state. It’s important each session is tailored to their comfort level, offering a calming, restorative experience rather than a deeply therapeutic one. Consulting with a healthcare provider before receiving massage can be a good idea, especially if you are still physically recovering.
My experience: I’ve worked with a number of clients after pregnancy loss and have experienced several losses myself. Each one different, and each one needing time and support to process. My approach is consistently gentle with a strong conviction that it’s a time when people really, really, really deserve nurturing and support as they integrate their experience and healing process into every day life and future possibilities.
If you think this might be something you could benefit from, let’s connect. I am always happy to have a no-obligations discussion and talk through your wants, needs, and options. Ngā mihi nui x
