What is mother massage and why it matters

I’m a mum who is also a massage therapist, so to me mother massage is obvious and essential. That said, it’s a bit of an umbrella term that I thought might be useful to break down for people - whether you’re new to massage as a wellbeing tool or you’re new to mothering.

1. Pregnancy massage

Pregnancy brings a lot of physical and emotional changes, and a pregnancy massage can offer much-needed relief. Ideal for any stage of pregnancy, this type of massage focuses on alleviating common discomforts like back pain, swelling, and muscle tension. It also promotes relaxation and enhances blood circulation, which is important for both a mum and their baby. A pregnancy massage supports emotional wellbeing, allowing you to embrace the journey with more comfort and ease. You deserve to be nurtured during this special time.

2. Postpartum massage

The postpartum period is a time of significant physical recovery and emotional adjustment. Massage can help ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and release the lingering effects of childbirth. It provides a quiet moment to reconnect with your body and your sense of self. During this time, gentle, compassionate massage can provide comfort and support as you navigate grief and healing. Massage can help release physical tension, promote emotional processing, and offer a moment of peace during overwhelming times. It’s important to be kind to yourself and allow space for healing. Your body and heart need nurturing, and massage can help provide that safe, gentle touch when you need it most.

This doesn’t even include people finding it difficult to conceive, the exhausted mother with a toddler, the single mum doing her best, the mother who is neurodivergent and/or with a neurodivergent baby, mums with multiple mouths to feed and lives to tend to, mums with limited social or family support, mums struggling financially, the mother dealing with grief or a massive change in circumstances and so on.
